It was actually a lot bigger than this....

I got the idea to dry out some of my fountain grass clippings while trimming it the other day.  Our red fountain grass has gotten really huge and after a rain storm, most of it had just fallen over.  So I took this obvious cue and trimmed the grass which now looks like this:

Trimmed, but still looking pretty good ;)

However, I saved like a third of the clippings so that I could dry them out and use them indoors.  I already had some twine on hand, so I sorted the grass into bundles and pulled out any random clippings that were no good and tied each bundle.  Now I need to find a dry dark place to store them….I’m thinking my laundry room ;)

decoration diy home inspiration DIY to Try: Giant Paper Flowers

Very Fun!

There’s a great tutorial over at Design*Sponge from Ruche that would be very fun to do.  Honestly, I could probably only handle making one (possibly up to three, depending on how much fun I was having).  However, they are so textured, bright and fun, they could be used for party or seasonal decorations.

Once made, I would definitely store and keep them for future use because I am not one to repeat intricate projects over and over–for myself anyways ;)  Well, I hope this inspires you to do a fun project today, big or small, one can be done!

outdoors decoration diy home inspiration Enjoy Your Weekend!

I am feeling good about this space ;)

The weekend is fast approaching and the more I work on our outdoor space, the more I want to hang out outside!  I am excited to get more done this weekend and share results with you as well ;)  I do want to briefly share about my other recent Craigslist score….folding wicker chairs!  Four for $30!  The coolest part was a few days later when I saw a similar, but lesser quality version at Stein Mart for $40 each!!!  I am delighted to have these chairs that I can use indoors and out, and they add a textural element to any setting.

This weekend I hope to finish digging up the rest of the patch of grass in between the front walkways.  Also, I need to cut back our fountain grass and divide some of it to put in other places of our yard.   What will you be working on this weekend?

outdoors orlando goods gardenlandscape diy Working With What Youve Got: Yard Vignette

Sweet potato flowers in the container

I am quite happy with the yard we have a this point and I am always seeing the potential as well.  There is a “niche” or “vignette” in our yard that was already established and so our mission is to uncover the beauty and add our spin to this area.  The photo below is the one of the first shots we took, but we had already started making changes, like removing a scary clam like fountain that would get filled with stagnant water and I think one time something died in it (gross).

Not much going on, even with little improvements

Anywho, we put an old computer monitor frame on an immovable pedestal near the main bush and put some ferns and succulents in it and added some Mexican Petunias on one side.  There was a bush and a small tree that we chopped down.  The small tree kept growing back, so we tried keeping it and just shaping it into a bush (above, on the left).

Chopped down the bush/tree once again

The bush is gone!

We finally got sick of the bush/tree and cut it down again, then we uncovered some brick and pavers that had grass and weeds growing all over them and added some rocks in the area where one of the bushes had grown (we were able to remove the stump and main root).

Removed the grass and weeds covering the pavers a brick

That wheelbarrow contains all the dirt that was covering up the pavers and brick, and I hope to use most of it for some other container plants that I have planned out for certain areas. This is what we have and we are working with it and enjoying the blessings that we’ve been given.

outdoors gardenlandscape diy Another Side Yard Addition!

Donzo!

You may recall the original side yard beautification project from awhile back, which is still doing quite well (considering my lack of maintenance).   Yesterday, I gave our bare half wall something to stand out about.   I spruced up  this plain Jane structure with a flower box, some Marigolds, Succulent clippings and Purslane clippings.  Fifteen minutes worth or leveling, drilling, hanging, potting, watering and I got to check off another “to-do” item ;)  What project can you get done in 15 minutes today!!!

Before:

Needed a little lovin'

Added some Purslane clipping that will eventually fill out

This Succulent clipping will add a little height once it fills in

Just a little something extra!

This project cost $8!!

  • Metal Flower Box = $1 – Garage Sale
  • Coco Liner = $4 – BigLots
  • Marigolds= $2.97+tax – Home Depot
  • Succulent Clippings = Free – My Backyard
  • Purslane Clippings = Free – My Side Yard
  • 2 screws and 2 anchors = Free – Already had some

outdoors gardenlandscape diy Yard WORK!

There is a cement path underneath the creeping grass

The thing about landscaping when you don’t have a big budget, is doing projects yourself!  I have vowed to conquer this little project in our front yard and hopefully I can have it done by the end of next week.  There has been this stone path ever since we moved in and it has constantly been overgrown by creeping grass.  The little grassy patch in the middle is another project, because we want to remove the grass and just have plants (I was thinking succulents).  I started the process a couple of days ago and now we are here:

outdoors gardenlandscape diy Yard WORK!

This shall be the second and last time I uncover this path!

While I was beginning the digging journey, I realized that this process might be easier if the grass and roots were dead.  So I proceeded to  spray Round Up on that little patch of grass and now I am waiting for the results which will take a few days or even a week, but I am hoping it will help in the end.  Then the digging commence:

The dead grass is covering up a brick border which will hopefully be exposed once again ;)
