How could this get any better?

I can’t even remember how I stumbled upon these various makeovers, but I searched for more ideas because of this first transformation I saw on Design*Sponge (in the first two photos).  So, although the interior of my house is no where near complete, I have big dreams for the exterior and the less expensive it can be, the better!  I had seen the same idea done differently and I was a little confused as to how it was transformed, but then these photos cleared it up for me.

I could definitely envision this in my yard!

A Planter!!!  Look at that “after” shot of this planter (which can be painted any color or just add a topcoat).  Planters this big usually cost a small fortune or….more than I am willing to spend.  Even if you don’t have one of these big ones, you can find them on Craigslist for reeeeaaaaally cheap.  Adding some green to your yard or patio for less green, all the while creating a new function for an otherwise trash day pick up item.    So many possibilities, I am squealing on the inside!

An old door is used as the top of the desk!

The next redo idea above, pretty much consists of just painting the file cabinets and procuring a great table top to create a sleek and very modern looking desk.  I love this because it is so simple and yet it appears sophisticated, with a hit of spunk.

My what a little Decoupage can do :)

Following along with the office theme, these file cabinets were decoupaged with…..oh yeah…wrapping paper.  Sometimes decoupage can go wrong, but this is so right :)   This just adds a great custom quality to a wonderfully organized and efficient office space.

And what about the kitchen? What about the kitchen (you reply, intriguingly)? ISLANDS, yes, you can get an island out of these tough guys too.  Both of these examples happen to be in the turquoise family, but feel free to choose any color your heart desires.

With one cabinet...

With two cabinets

The next two examples just involve moving your filing cabinet to a new location in your home…yep, that simple.  In the kitchen, this four drawer cabinet does not look out of place at all.  It plays into the large, dark wooden beams in this kitchen and I could imagine that with in those very drawers holds pot lids, cook books, oddly shaped kitchenware, you name it, these drawers will gladly bear the burden.

Fits like a glove.

Lastly, we have the old file cabinet in the living room trick.  I wouldn’t normally recommend this, but seeing is believing and this doesn’t look half bad.  It looks to me like there is some sort of glaze on it and it is of a different variation of “the file cabinet,” but it pulls it off.  The only reason I think it can work is because it is in the mix with elegant and refined objects, to give it a more “dressed up” feel.  I hope you got some ideas for your old file cabinet that you were about to donate or kick to the curb, I know I did!
