We did a test swatch on the previous red and yellow walls

Laura loves color!  This is a rare yet fabulous quality that I fully intend to exploit!  However, in order to achieve the fun, coffee house, social gathering vibe that she desires, we had to change the super bright yellow great room and really red kitchen because it is a little too overpowering and we want to showcase her space, not just her walls.  I’m glad she is open to my proposition although she is fearful of the color White and that everything will look too bland.  Another concern is the need for a lot more light in her great room space as there are only two windows on opposite sides of this huge space, one being a sliding glass door that is enclosed in porch….so lighting is a huge factor that needs attention.  So far, I feel like the space has “lightened” and opened up a bit with the color changes, which is a good thing.  I changed the kitchen color from red to a muted, mid-yellow  tone that brightens the small space and now makes her red and other colorful kitchenware pop and stand out.  Then we did a brownish-gray color on the upper part of the great room wall and then a white stripe and then a light yellow-cream color, called “Cream Puff).  This effect provides a modern, relaxed feel, while adding interest to the huge expanse of wall.  We are going to paint the wood fire place the yellow of the kitchen for extra color that will make a great impact.  I decided not to paint the brown and stripe on the far wall with the sliding glass door because it is the darker of the two natural lighting sources, so we wanted to keep it light and the colorful draperies will be a focal point for that wall.  The “during” phase is always scary to the homeowner, Laura is scared of the new “neutral” walls (her words, not mine), but I promise there will be color, think of this as just the canvas prep for now :)

Here are some more paint progress photo’s from Laura’s house:
