I’ve compiled a photo list of items that I have seen on Craigslist and that no one should ever buy from there, or anywhere for that matter. If you are trying to furnish/decorate your home without the help of a interior stylist/decorator/designer, it can be overwhelming. This list will help you narrow the margins while shopping for your home.
What Not To BUY:
“Functional” Desks
Usually made out of two kinds of materials (inexpensive materials) and have a lot going on….a random curve here, an extra shelf there. There’s “too” much happening with it.

This desk doesn’t belong to any style genre
“Functional” T.V. stands
Again, the “cheaper” kind made with two types of materials, random curves and “amenities.”

Style-less
Thin MDF bookcases/furniture.
If you are ever going to buy something made of MDF, it should probably be new and be used for something lightweight. MDF is not made to support really heavy objects, so it will sag (like the desk in the photo) and that does not look good.

Thin and flimsy furniture is a “No No”
Ultra smooth and glossy “formica” furniture

This is not much of a “Classic” or “Timeless” style
Items with too many materials and “intricacies”

This piece is trying to fool you into thinking it is a “Classic” and “Timeless” piece with all of it’s details, but it’s not.
Low Quality Office chairs

Not worth the time, money or effort
Why you shouldn’t buy any of these things:
• You can definitely find better constructed and nicer furniture pieces right on Craigslist or at garage sales for the same price or less.
• They do not belong to any particular style genre and therefore will not contribute to any design aesthetic in a positive way.
When you are thinking about purchasing furniture that looks anything like these photos, ask yourself one question, “Have I seen this in any of the homes showcased in leading interior design periodicals?” The answer is “no.”
