Specific and pinpointed inspiration can really help you turn your decor around! If you are unsure about how to go about styling your digs, find a room(s) that you like and pull practical ideas from it. This is a great example of how to do just that! I had the privilege of helping a friend transform her rental into an inviting, Scandal inspired living space. I’ll show you how to incorporate things you like and the things you already have, and turn your dream into a reality.

First things First: Expectations

We are not all blessed to find ourselves in a luxurious apartment with a private elevator, high ceilings, tons of space, parque wooden floors, gorgeous molding, and lots of high end furniture. However, we can capture a “look ‘n’ feel” of those drool worthy spaces with some strategic placement and purchases. So although your space won’t be an exact replica, it will be an enjoyable and exciting place to call home.

Next: Survey What You Have

Is there even just one thing that remotely resembles anything from your dream room? Gather up the decor/furniture that will work and separate it from what pieces won’t work.  In our case, Carly moved into a larger space, so she had some extra square footage. That factor, combined with a few furniture pieces that wouldn’t work in the whole “Scandal” inspiration plan, put us in the position to be able to purchase some pieces that would facilitate the end goal. Here’s what she could and could not use:

What she had and COULD use:

  • Bookshelves
  • Sofas
  • chaise
  • Art
  • Floor lamp base
  • Dining room table and chairs

What she had and could NOT use:

  • Black TV stand (moved to a bedroom)
  • Black coffee table
  • Ikea Expedit small bookcase (currently using as a place holder for a console table)

Create and Prioritize a Purchase List

If you’re reading my blog, then most likely you have some sort of budget. Therefore if you have a budget, you’ll need to prioritize what things you can’t live without. What items will give you the “Look’n’Feel” that you want? Here’s what we came up with for her space:

Purchase List:

  • Curtains for Living and Dining Room
  • 3 Accent chairs
  • Side tables
  • TV Stand
  • Accent Pillows and Throws
  • Coffee table
  • 2 Lamps
  • Wall Sconces

Pinpoint Specific Items to Emulate from Dream Space

From Olivia Pope’s apartment looks, we nailed down what would work in this space. Here’s the run down:

  • Blue and neutral hues
  • Florals
  • Overall calming/relaxed impression
  • Clean lines/transitional style
  • Textures

Finally: Put It All Together

Assembling is the fun part! Putting all the pieces together and adding your own personal touches.

For Carly, she is also really inspired by French decor, so adding a dash of that into the mix helped create a look all it’s own! And to think, it all started with the background of a TV show ;)
